Divorce and the Holidays

By the time December ends, many New Year’s resolutions include getting a divorce and starting a new life. There are a variety of reasons for these decisions to end marriages. For example, many couples stay together for the holidays because of their children, etc., thinking somehow that pretending a relationship is intact will somehow fool family members.

Others have an end-of-the-year personal crisis where goals and dreams are re-examined in light of a disappointing reality. Not everyone lives happily ever after…and if Prince Charming turns into a toad after taking marital vows, or Cinderella looks like a pumpkin after letting herself go, then odds are the grass will look greener on the other side of the divorce fence.

If you’re considering a divorce, what should you do? If your spouse has had an affair, consider filing right away. It will never get any better. You might forgive but you’ll never forget. Other than that, take a serious hard look at what is causing problems in your marriage. You got married for a reason. Remember that reason and give serious consideration as to whether you want to stay married and work things out. If not, don’t beat a dead horse. File, and move on to a new life.
